Choosing the right glue for your project Some adhesives become hard and brittle after they dry, while other types remain pliable after they dry. This makes different adhesives better for different projects. For instance, if you were to repair a cabinet joint with glue, you would not want to use the type of adhesive that is flexible when dry; but if you were to glue two different types of materials together you may want a more flexible glue due to the fact that these materials will expand and contract differently. A stiff drying glue would too easily break away from the material.
You will want an adhesive that is resistant to chemicals if the material you are gluing will be subject to any chemicals. Let's use your kitchen counter as an example. Most likely you will be using chemical household cleaners to disinfect the counter, so any adhesive that breaks down when exposed to chemicals is not something you want.
The enivornment is another factor you should consider when choosing a glue. If you will be gluing something that will remain outdoors, or in an area of high humidity, you will definitely want to use waterproof glue with a water repellent that can withstand the moisture.
There are many different types of adhesives available, but not all of them can be used for all projects.
- Hot glue is a common type of glue that must be used with a hot glue gun. This is a moderate strength adhesive that dries quickly. Hot glue is most often used by hobbyists and for crafts.
- Epoxy glue is another type of adhesive and it must be mixed before it can be used. It's best used on non-porous material because it is ia strong bonding glue. Epoxy glue will dissolve plastic.
- When bonding surfaces where clamping is not an option, use contact cement. Once applied, the bond is permanent and the glue remains strong.
- White glue is another adhesive with medium bonding strength. This glue is not waterproof and is used to glue wood, cloth and paper materials.
- Animal glue is the first glue that people used. In liquid form, Animal glue can be applied cold or hot. Constructing furniture is a common use for Animal glue because it has strong bonding abilities.
Due to the number of adhesives available to you, finding the right glue for your project is essential and it can make the difference in how well an object will hold up. Always remember that you still need to read the directions even on a substance as simple as glue because many of the glues are toxic and even flammable.
